2 Hour Flight from Madrid Spain -  (100 kilometres off the western African coast) - the Canarian archipelago is the wild west of surfing.
Warm water, and consistant waves break over a mixture of sand and reef. The reefs are pretty "reefy" with sea urchins and sharp coral, however the beachoes do exist and are heaps of fun. This makes the Canary Islands perfect for beginer surfers and the experienced surf traveler.

There are 7 islands that form the volcanic archipelago.  Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the 2 main ones and have  more crowds and surf spots taken over by local surfers. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are great surfing options being as though the local surfers are fewer and tourism still remains in its infancy.

Lanzarote is the eastern most island and has a reputation of providing powerful and consistant waves with volcanos and black lava rock mixed with white washed houses set amoung a moonlike scenery.

Winds do effect the islands and often hit by north -easterly trade winds which can kill off the northerly swell at times. As with all places on the planet - respect to the locals always go along way.
